TikTok Banned on Government Devices amid Security Concerns
Today the UK Government has announced that, on security grounds, the Chinese-owned social media app TikTok will be banned on devices utilised by civil servants and government ministers, taking immediate action. Cabinet Office Minister, Oliver Dowden, released a statement earlier today stating the possible risks to government data and information from the app confirming that the ban is good cyber “hygiene”. Before this newly implemented ban, a variety of government departments had active TikTok accounts, with the Ministry of Defence (MoD) recently posting a video on its account of a Challenger 2 tank, which is being supplied to Ukraine.
TikTok has denied any allegations that it gives users’ data to the Chinese government, however, with other countries, including the US, Canada, Belgium, and India, already introducing bans to the app on official devices, it raises concerns on the security and possible vulnerabilities the app could give its users. China has also released information accusing the US of spreading misinformation and limiting TikTok, with reports suggesting that the White House wants the Chinese owners to sell their shares in the firm.
